Stockport and South Manchester isn't well known for its fruit orchards nestled in rolling bucolic countryside, so cider and perry makers are a bit thin on the ground. The only producer actually in the branch were Mad Hatter and Temperance Street Cider, but as both are now defunct we have included some from around about ten miles radius. Though listed as one location, some are in fact a cooperation of several producers all working from the same location.

CAMRA defines the main requirement for real Cider or Perry as being fermented from the whole juice of fresh pressed apples or pears, without the use of concentrate. This means that 'real cider' (and perry) can be served from keg, might be filtered and could be heavily carbonated, but within this, there are a number of real ciders and perries which can be additionally described as ‘live’. It also means the practical methodology used by previously supported larger producers, such as Thatchers, of extracting the juice then concentrating it is outlawed. This is done to make the amount of equipment dedicated to storage much reduced in volume. Once rehydrated, the juice is then handled in much the same way as real ale is, that is no additives, no filtration. no pasteurisation and especially no carbonation of its previously acknowledged 'real cider'. We leave the consumer to decide whether filtered and heavily carbonated cider/perry is real.
