Pub Of The Year Process
Pub Of The Year Selection
We choose our Pub Of The Year in January from among the 12 Pubs Of The Month (POTM) for the previous calendar year (POTM process here).
NOTE: As part of CAMRA’s Handpump Hijack Campaign (https://camra.org.uk/take-action/handpump-hijack/) any pub serving Marstons "FreshAle" products (currently limited to Wainwright Golden, Wainwright Amber and/or Hobgoblin IPA) will be excluded from all CAMRA awards.
Initially at the January committee meeting all 12 pubs are scrutinised and any which have become ineligible are identified as follows:
- The pub is closed
- The landlord has moved on
- A noticeable dip in beer quality has been reported
Immediately after the Committee Meeting an online poll is set up populated with the eligible Pubs Of The Month and the communication tool used to promote the link to all members. Every member can then vote for one pub with the poll closing shortly before the January branch meeting.
The top five pubs from the vote are then presented at the January Branch Meeting and a sponsor called for each. Any unsupported pubs fall.
The sponsor then has a minute or two to speak on behalf of their nomination, followed by questions from the meetings.
The meeting then cast their votes as follows:
- If one pub secures 50% of the votes plus one, it becomes the Pub Of The Year.
- If no pub achieves this threshold, the lowest supported pub is eliminated and the vote repeated until one exceeds 50%.
- In the case of a dead heat between the final two pubs, then the Chairperson exercises their casting vote.
