Day out in Happy Valley

Friday 9 October 2026 11:45

Meet in Manchester Victoria at 11:45am for the 11:57 train bound for Leeds.

Fox & Goose

The Fox & Goose is a traditional pub in the Calder Valley that is at the heart of the community. As the first co-operative pub in West Yorkshire, it is owned and overseen by its users.

The pub serves a wide range of real ales (on 6 handpumps) from microbrewers, as well as real ciders, craft beer and lager on draught. There is always a low-alcohol beer on keg, and a range of continental bottled lagers and beers in the fridge. The Fox and Goose is listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide and has Cask Marque accreditation. In April 2022 they were awarded Halifax and Calderdale CAMRA’s Pub of the Year award for the second time since opening as a co-operative pub.

Beer is only served in lined oversize glasses. That way when you order a pint of beer you get a pint of liquid refreshment plus a creamy head. Most other pubs and bars serve a pint in a brim-full glass, so you don't get a full pint of beer.

Drink

Drink is a specialist bottle shop and sampling room with a small bar to the rear and a secluded upstairs lounge. Two hand pumps dispense a range of rotating pale and hoppy beers from Northern independent breweries, with a third pump dedicated to dark beers, mainly in winter.

Real cider is also available. Minimalist décor but exhibits work by local artists. The wide range of bottled beers, some of which are bottle conditioned, may be consumed on or off the premises.

• Pub of the Season Summer 2025

Old Gate bar and restaurant

This smart, modern and popular bar serves quality food all day in the bar and upstairs restaurant. Ait has a striking copper-topped bar which serves nine real ales, one is always a dark as well as six rotating ales.

Disabled access to each level of the split-level bar area is via separate doors off the patio fronting the pub. The large windows provide good views for people watching from armchairs, benches and sofas. Regular and frequent bus services pass along the road outside.

• Pub of the Season Winter 2024/2025

Hidden Hebden

Calderdale's first micro-pub when opened in 2015. Previously named The Pub and Calan’s, this micropub has steadily increased its beer range to six hand pumps with a greater number of breweries represented, one dark beer is always available The compact bar room has flagstone floors and reclaimed wood décor.

Outside is a sun trap courtyard which is covered and heated for winter drinking. No piped music disturbs the conversation. Food from the adjacent pizzeria may be consumed inside or outside the pub..

Cash is preferred for smaller amounts to avoid bank fees.

Nightjar

Opened in June 2017 underneath the listed Picture House building this compact micro pub is the tap for the Mytholmroyd based Nightjar Brew Co. It serves three real ales, one from their own brewery and two guests from small independents. A range of craft keg beers are also available.

Stripped back brick walls and a flagstone floor off set the tiny brick-built bar and unusual split olive wood tables. There are additional tables and seating on the pavement outside.

The Albert

Built on an unusual triangular site, this pub has been partially opened out, but it retains much of its original Victorian style. A bright and welcoming bar faces the entrance at an angle; the small seating area to the left, with its fireplace and decorative pictures, was once a separate 'snug'. Note the line on the wall indicating the level of the Boxing Day 2015 flooding. To the right there are two pleasant rooms running along the front of the building, linked by an arch and fitted out with attractive wall seating.

There's a good Victorian style fireplace at the other end and numerous interesting prints on the walls. Further back, to the right of the bar, there's an open area with several musical instruments and unusual light fittings.

They have six cask ales, expect to see ales from Theakston’s and Timothy Taylors.

Vocation & Co.

This was Vocation & Co’s first taproom. Modern minimalist beer bar on the main street opposite the canal marina. On entering, the main room has a seating area and a bar to the rear with four hand pulls on the bar and a "wall of taps" behind serve a varied range of craft keg beers.

The smaller, more intimate room to the right mainly accommodates diners, who enjoy good quality burgers and loaded fries. The guest beer is usually dark from a regional microbrewery. A new seating area to the left of the building opened in spring 2023 using space previously occupied by a barber shop.

Food is available for those in need of a meal before our journey back.
