The Armoury is currently largely hidden from view, concealed behind the fencing that has been erected outside while the Greek Street railway bridge and roundabout are replaced. Don’t let that put you off, though, as the Armoury is still very much open for business.
The ongoing construction work, due to be completed ‘next spring’, has obviously been something of a challenge for licensees Pete Johnson and Holly Scotts who took over the pub in October last year.
However, although the Armoury is their first pub, neither of them is new to the licensed trade, with a decade’s worth of experience to call on. They are also both familiar with the pub and the local area, coming as they do from Offerton.
The pub itself has bedded in following a rather drastic refurbishment by Robinsons a few years ago, when most of its heritage features were removed (although some of the old Bell’s Brewery internal glasswork remains). Pete and Holly have worked hard to re-establish the Armoury with the local community and it does seem to have taken off again.
Obviously, football features strongly in the pub’s offer, both when Stockport County are at home, and with other matches screened during the week. There’s more to the Armoury than that, though, and other activities include quiz nights and acoustic sessions that alternate on Wednesdays. Work on the upstairs function room is now more or less complete and hopefully that will host a new darts team (it also provides a great view of the ongoing engineering work).
And what about the beer? You’ll find Robinsons Unicorn, Dizzy Blonde, Trooper and the current seasonal on the bar – and all in superb condition. These will be enjoyed on the night of Thursday 23 October when we present Pete and Holly with this well-deserved award.
Buses 11 and 368 from Stockport Interchange will drop you close by. The 192 will drop you at Stockport College from where it’s a short walk down Greek Street.
