Weekday Wander - Hadfield and environs

Tuesday 5 August 2025 10:50

Being August we, hopefully, will be blessed by glorious Autumnal weather for this sojourn out to the edge of the Peak District. For those without a travel pass, the local buses are run by High Peak buses but the Bee Network Anybus ticket is still valid - make sure you ask for this any bus version of the ticket and it will cover your travel to/from home, as well as the four bus journeys in Derbyshire. As to whether the Bee Tap-On/Tap-Off system, with its daily limit, applies I have no idea (but guess not).

HIP-632-12197-smithy-fold-glossop.jpg We open this Wander at the ever reliable Wetherspoon's outlet in Glossop, the Smithy Fold. This is a conversion from former cotton mill, Bridge End Mill. Built in the 19th Century, with later alterations, but not enough to stop it being listed by High Peak Borough (entry number 1384302). The bridge the mill was named after was replaced (in a revised position) in 1837, so that gives a latest date for the mill's erection. Prior to becoming a pub parts of the building were used as a tourist information office. For more interesting 'Glossop' facts there is a facts page on the Wetherspoon's website here, but their interpretation of Glossop includes as far afield as Hayfield and Broadbottom!

We now need to use the High Peak bus number 393. This route is run by a single bus which, because of traffic congestion, can become notoriously late, so it is worth keeping an eye on its progress using the bustimes.org tracker [if you follow this link outside 7:45am to 6:30pm it will be blank as the bus doesn't run outside these hours. An alternative is to catch either bus 237 or the train to Hadfield station then a 15 minute uphill walk.

HIP-128-143200-peels-arms-padfield.jpg Whichever route we use, we will now visit every (only!) pub in Padfield, the Peels Arms. A popular location, both with locals [though probably not at this hour] and visitors to the area, especially walkers and cyclists on the nearby Longdendale Trail. As well as beer, the Peels Arms is well known for its excellent, home cooked, food. However, if you wish to impress your friends with your physical prowess, don't eat too heartily otherwise you won't be able to fit through the challenging "Hole in the wall". Should you succeed you will be rewarded with a certificate (and a good many bruises!) Fingers crossed for good weather as their beer garden is an excellent place to while away an hour or two — but not today as we need to move on.

Again we are at the mercy of the 393 bus, but it is only a 12 minute walk downhill to our next destination.

HIP-126-143198-palatine-hadfield.jpg But don't walk too quickly as our next destination, the Palatine, doesn't open until 2pm on weekdays. Located opposit the entrance to Hadfield Station, the Palatine opened in 1846, coincident with the opening of the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway's line from, well obviously, Sheffield to Manchester. Opened as a free-house, Robinsons took over surprisingly, early in 1920, and left it (almost) untouched until 2015, at which point they spent a few bob on bringing things up to date. One thing you won't miss is the spectacular bar prices listing, which takes up the whole wall adjacent to the bar, so big even Mr Magoo would be able to read it! Had a Mr Beeching not had a little influence on railways in Britain, you might have seen EuroStar trains thundering through Hadfield station as Edward Watkin, a previous managing director of the line, had continental ambitious. The line, along with the extension to London (and beyond), were all built to take European sized train. How different HS2 could have looked if the line hadn't been closed.

Again we are at the mercy of the 393 bus, with the walk being nearer 15 minutes, so hopefully it is on time.

HIP-123-143199-chieftain-hadfield.jpg Being a sixties(?) estate built pub, the Chieftain is in a different architectural league to our previous outlets, but nevertheless offers a warm welcome. Two beers are regularly available, supplemented by a third when sales justify. Food is available here, but only Thursday to Sunday, however... Tuesday night is Curry Night. Unlike the two previous pubs, the views here are over suburban gardens, so plenty of gnomes and bird tables but no grand vistas with epic Turner cloudscapes.

Moving on again, but still at the mercy of the 393 bus. Anyone who has had enough can abandon us as we pass Dinting Station and make their way home.

HIP-117-16351-star-inn-glossop.jpg A short stride away from the bus stop, right next to the station, is the Star Inn (funny there doesn't seem to be a Station or Railway pub in Glossop). Not opening till 4pm, so don't rush here as you will only have to wait outside. The Star is the epitome of a Victorian ale house, with conversation predominating and featuring wood panelling and fitted seats. As you enter, the bar is on the left, with further rooms beyond. You will be greeted by five wickets featuring local(ish) breweries. If you sit by the window you can keep an eye out for the train pulling in to the station before scampering out to catch it [but I would advise leaving by the quarter hour]. Tip: If you miss the Manchester bound train, catch the next Hadfield bound train and take the round trip rather than sitting on the station.
