Mild Magic Inaugural Outing
Mild Magic Inaugural Outing
Or should this be a Mild Magic Meander?
A number of pubs visited with, potentially half a card completed in one evening
On your marks — Get set — GO!
The race to gather sufficient area stickers in order to complete your Mild Magic card(s) is started, so we have arranged this saunter around Stockport, taking in six area, in order to get you off to a flying start.
We start at the Nursery, where they will more than likely be faced with an immediate conundrum, which of the two milds on offer to partake of. Being a Hydes pub, the likelihood is both 1863 (a historic Manchester light mild) and Dark Ruby will be on offer.
Next up is the Magnet which, being a multi-ale free house. Multi-award winning with a dozen (or so) handpulls, one of which is invariably a mild/dark beer. Once entered it might be a challenge to get people out and on the way to our next venue. Whatever mild is available, you can also indulge in a pizza, should you already be suffering from the munchies.
Down the hill and a quick right will bring us to the Crown Inn nestling under the imposing viaduct. Another multi-ale freehouse, so again we have no idea what will be on the bar. WARNING: Should you not planning on completing Mild Magic Super (48 pubs) be aware that the Crown and Magnet are in the same area, so only one would be eligible if only aiming for 12 pubs.
Now we have two options, up the hill towards Edgeley and the Ye Olde Vic. Before today, that iconic offering, Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild has been on offer here, but don't get your hopes up of being offered this on the first evening. Whatever is on offer it will be unusual and worthwhile. After this you can head back towards the Interchange and thence the town centre.
Option two is to head directly towards the town centre where we have no less than five options awaiting us. However be aware that, due to groupings there are only three areas available, so pick up stickers judiciously (unless you plan to have a few swaps available for later!)
All outlets in the town centre are freehouses, and all are located within about 100m of St Petersgate Bridge, so no real navigation problems. In no particular order, other than this appears to be a likely route, we have:
Crossing Mersey Square and walking along Great Underbank brings us to the White Lion. Reopened only a year or so, but keeping a good pint, and very enthusiastic about Mild Magic. Now we cut up the steps from Little Underbank to the Market place, where we encounter the Angel Inn. Almost next door we have the Bakers Vaults, while at the other side of the Market Place we encounter the Cocked Hat. Returning back towards Mersey Square we encounter out last outlet, the Petersgate Tap.
There endeth the evening, unless you plan to leap of your transport home and bag a few extra stickers!
