Weekday Wander - A homage to Nena

Tuesday 2 April 2024 11:30

This month's Wander offers a (slight) nod to Gabriele Susanne Kerner (Nena) featuring not 99 red balloons but the 199 Skyline red bus.

Because the 199 can be notoriously unpredictable I have added an extra "buffer" establishment in case timings start going awry, but that doesn't preclude us visiting all five if desired.

Although ostensible a Disley day out, I have added in a swift stop in High Lane. If on time, the 199 will drop us outside the Royal Oak as the door opens, but based upon its usual performance, we will be there late! Two beers are offered along with food. Internally it is a traditionally decked out including a log burning stove. The Royal Oak is also conveniently situated for anyone partaking of the Middlewood Way.

A swift bus ride up to Disly also drops us right outside our next port of call, the Dandy Cock. The WhatPub description is both succinct and accurate, "Friendly locals pub in centre of village". Food is again also available, but finishes at 2:30, so if the 199 is severely delayed they may have stopped serving. Anyone brave enough to ask how the pub got its name?

The Rams Head has been added in in case the schedule goes awry, but can be missed out if time is tight. The Rams Head is run by Mitchells & Butlers, who advertise it as a "country pub". Can become filled with people eating, but drinkers can usually find a nook or cranny to partake of their beverage.

We will next be calling in the Malt Disley. This modern bar is a complete contrast to the previous locations, being compact but still with a warm welcome. Food is also available, but in the form of cakes (supplied by Bell Brownies of New Mills). This is a free house and four beers should be on offer, usually including a dark beer. Should the bar be packed there is additional seating downstairs.

We now have a few minute's walk east along the A6 to the White Lion. Because the A6 is so busy it is advisable to cross using the pedestrian crossing. Like the previous establishment, the White Lion is a free house so who knowns with what we will be greeted. The inside is utilitarian, but the greeting is warm and a variety of board game are available for customers if we are up for it.
